SYNOPSIS
A new year, a new era. In
January 1978, Ron Atkinson took the helm at West Bromwich Albion, and began one
of the most memorable periods in the club’s history.
The flamboyant Atkinson had an
immediate impact, and the club was soon in the media spotlight. With some
incredible victories at home and abroad, the Baggies were breaking new ground
all the time, not least by employing football’s ‘Three Degrees’: Regis,
Cunningham and Batson, spearheading the first wave of black players in the
English game.
With players such as Bryan
Robson, Willie Johnston, Derek Statham and Tony Brown gracing The Hawthorns
pitch, the crowds flocked to catch a glimpse of their heroes, as Albion rubbed
shoulders with football’s elite and took the good word to the
Far East, as the first English club ever to visit
China.
